The first cabin leaves at about 07:30. Bad weather can stop the line at short notice, so leave a spare day if the summit matters to you. The best-time page shows which months bring the most fog.

From town to the summit

  1. Mường Hoa train. A funicular from Sa Pa Station in Sun Plaza, in the town centre, runs about 2 km down to Mường Hoa station in about 6 minutes (source). A return costs about 200,000 VND, per vietnamtourism.com. It ends next to the cable car station.
  2. Cable car. From Hoàng Liên station to Đỗ Quyên station, 6,292.5 m long, with cabins for about 35 people.
  3. The last stretch. A second funicular climbs to Trúc Mây station, at about 150,000 VND up and 120,000 VND down. The alternative is about 600 steps: 20–30 minutes up and 15 down.

What is on top

Sun Group lists these sights on top:

  • the 3,143 m summit marker
  • a bronze Amitābha Buddha statue
  • Bích Vân Zen temple
  • the Great Statue of Avalokiteśvara
  • Bản Mây, a recreated village of local ethnic houses

The summit runs about 10 °C colder than Sa Pa, so bring a warm layer even in summer.

Avoiding the queues

Vietnamtourism.com reports waits of 1–2 hours at weekends, at Tết, over 30 April to 1 May and on 2 September. Go before 09:30 or after 15:00. If you are staying in Sa Pa town, the Mường Hoa train starts in Sun Plaza in the centre.

Fitter visitors can walk up instead and take the cable car down, but check the one-way fare first.
